2 months off? Holy geez, what a slacker! Where've I been? Well, Spring Break season made work a little more time-consuming than usual, but the two real reasons I've been slacking are:
1- The web site:
The sketch blog thing works for starters, but I'd like to have a site more like Wonderella or Kukuburi, with archives, buy stuff sections, and most of all, navigation buttons. You will notice that I added my own at the top of the page here, but only the "First" and "Latest" ones work, while "Prev" and "Next" are really the two most important ones.
Since HTML is quickly becoming a thing of the past, I am now swimming in CSS books that I can hopefully wrap my little brain around.
I've also found a couple different hosts that claim to have "easy to use forums" that are supposed to help with programming and such. So far, that's crap.

2-Mystery Afoot:
Not a huge time consumer, but a project nonetheless. My friends Max (artist) and Zoki (writer) from SCAD (art school) have a comic about Cryptozoology that they were able to release in time for the C2E2 Convention in Chicago. C2E2 is supposed to be big enough to rival the San Diego Con, so great for publicity. Not sure yet how it did in that department, but I do know that Max and Zoki were able to set up shop and sell the book to a bunch of kick-ass people. Best of all, they asked ME to color the cover for them!

Logan and Alex, 2 of my other SCAD roomies, contributed to the Fan Art section in the back of the comic, which I'm guessing will be posted on the site soon enough.

And now for me to end my laziness, cause there's just WAY too much Boston sports awesomeness going around for me to not be sketchin like CRAZY!!

Well, remember these guys are roommates, and spent the holidays at home with their families. (Nice save right?)

The next strip should be the final Pats entry of the season (or at least for a while), bringing us into that lame time of year, when Pats are done, Sox haven't started yet, and the B's and C's aren't quite close enough to the playoffs to get too fired-up over a two or three game losing streak.

And the Super Bowl? Either way, I'll be rooting for the NFC. I wouldn't mind seeing the Vikings go all the way, having history's worst Superbowl record (0-5). Not that this excuses Favre for beating the Bledsoe-led Patriots in Superbowl 31, but I'll take Wrangler Jeans Man over Mr. Sprint Commercials any day... and don't even get me started on Mr. Entourage stunt-double.

Strip #8: An Instant Classic

Yes, the punchline is TERRIBLE!! There's also a good chance that this is your favorite one yet! (Go ahead, admit it, I won't tell anyone.)

Lots of fun with this one... too much fun actually. Could've been done way sooner, but every time I went to search for a reference online, I wound up re-watching half the game on YouTube. Little fun fact, the day after the big game they held a "Legends Classic", or something... it was Old-Timers and celebrities. I was a little bummed not to see Ray Bourque out there, but we had Neely, Rick Middeleton (my favorite as a kid), Orr number 4, and on the celebrity side, Jack Bauer was there! along with Tim Robbins, Denis Leary, lead man for the Dropkick Murphys, but the show stealer was the GOALIE, Bobby Farrelly, (creator/director of Dumb & Dumber, Something About Mary, Me Myself and Irene, Fever Pitch, etc.) who had a beercan goalie helmet! Dude played net with what looked like two 24-ounce cans on either side of his helmet, straws and all! (Sniff, sniff, my hero!)

One nice new addition to the strip, one that actually started with "Venom-Moss" is color-coded titles. Red with blue shadow for the sox, Blue with red for the Pats, and I assume you've figured out the Bruins and Celtics colors all by your little self.

TRIVIA TIME!!
Taking the letters "O M G" from the punchline, they can be rearranged to spell the last name of a Bruins goalie who played for us from the late 80's into the 90's. Name that goalie!
(Hint, you will need to use one of the letters twice.)

One final thought, I am eternally jealous of brother Tom and cousin Brian for actually being at the Winter Classic... ya bastards!

Sometimes puns are hard to spell. VenoMoss, Venom Mouss, Venom-Moss? Beats me. Puns are meant to be heard, not seen.

So you have by now noticed that this [late again] strip has a title. I recently registered a for a website domain through Comic Genesis at http://TheFaithful.ComicGenesis.com (not case sensitive). I've been having problems actually getting the stupid thing to work, so it's not much of a site yet, but when I do, there will be an archive included so you can click back to your favorite strips over and over again. Therefore, they all have titles, instead of just numbers. If you're curious, here are the titles for numbers 1 through 6:

The Faithful: Strip #2

Number two is here!! This one is about our sole victory against the Dang Yankees a couple of weeks ago.

I'm learning a lot about how long these things can take, and am still working on ways to get them done a lot faster, without sliding too much in quality.

Hopefully in the near future I will also have a home web page for Soxy and his yet-to-be-revealed pals. Right now, I think I'm scaring hosts away due to borderline copyright infringement.

It's finally happened...

Behold! The very first installment of my new webcomic: "The Faithful".

I've been wanting to do a webcomic for a few years now (sad as that is), and what mainly took me so long was finding a topic with some staying-power. I had a lot of ideas that seemed funny, but the fire died on them all too quickly. I thought about doing something news-related, so as to always have fresh material to pull from, but that would mean
1- I'd have to watch the news (and probably care), and
2- no more watching the Daily Show until my strip was complete (so as to not be tempted to steal jokes).

The Faithful is an idea that started back in the Springtime, when the Sox were starting a new season, and the Bruins and Celtics were playoff-bound championship contenders. Unfortunately, my new job was very demanding in preparing for the summer busy season, and so "The Faithful" never made it past the phase of a few sketchbook scribblings. Luckily, only a few of those ideas were time-sensitive, and so most of them will be resurrected into future strips.

The subject matter of this first strip is a month past-due, but I had to start somewhere, and this strip does a great job setting the tone for what's to come: Sox loving, Yankee hating, and all kinds of new Red Sox slang terms can be expected to be born here ("Jason B'eh", "Chaps my Sox", etc.).

And so on August 17th, 2009, I post my first strip, about July 14th's All-Star game in St. Louis.

My expectations for postings are once per week, scheduled day to be determined. We will, like Boston, focus on Red Sox first and Pats second, but will not forget about our beloved B's and C's. Branching out from there (Boston College, New England Revolution, etc.) is unlikely. I mean come on, How much can you accomplish in one week?

Got my roommates each a little gift this year. For those of you who don't know, my roommates are the immortal Eazy, and his unfortunately mortal girlfriend Coleen. Coleen is a face paint supervisor at Disney, and so I couldn't resist but draw face paints on everyone on her wrapping paper. I actually used marker instead of paint, except for anywhere you see white.

These people were a rare breed... they were really picky, but they were really cool too.

They needed something co-ed, being a last name, so I suggested a castle, but the tropical stuff goes better with their house (I guess they have a Navy theme since he served), but they kinda like the castle idea too, and then asked "Could you make it more Asian?", ummmm..... I guess he served in Korea, and so they could put it with their Asian decor in their Asian part of the house with all their other Asian stuff from Korea and Japan and what not (yeah, I'm curious to see this place too), so I said I could do a castle with a dragon and fire to make the "B", and they loved it, but their house is all in dark green, wine reds, and cream colors, and it has to match their house, "and could you maybe make the castle more Asian?", ummmmm..... "I think I've got a trick up my sleeve for the castle, but I can for sure do the dragon in those colors, and-" "Oh that's awesome, we totally trust you, it just HAS to match our house, and if you can't, no big deal." (Huh?)

Yeah. There's a reason why I typed all that as one big sentence. These guys were actually really funny, and above all, they loved the art.

PS: The spacing sucks.

This past week marks the first time I've ever worked more than one day in a row at caricatures (the total being four). By scrolling down through the other August posts, you can see that I'm starting to work a lot of the kinks out, such as coloring hair, speed, and basic line confidence. Still, the above sketch is definitely the highlight of my week.

The placement of the faces is off, but it actually makes the cartoon funnier.

You'd be screaming too if you were about to get kicked in the ball.

These guys sat down at 8:15. (We close at 8:00) It's not a great sketch, I'm just psyched that my slow ass pulled it off in only 20 minutes.

Day 3

It never fails that I like a sketch as soon as it's done a lot more than when I get home and review the pics. Nonetheless, here is the best of my Thursday at Top Gun:

First sketch of the day,and probably my best in terms of line quality. Too bad I forgot to take the photo while they were there.

Didn't realize he put his glasses back on for the pic. I also didn't come close to getting her eyes right.

Bad photo, mediocre likeness.

This one had a nice 'creepy yet funny' quality. I would have tried harder to sell it, but it attracted the attention of these four...

I really like how the mom came out. Her daughter has a kind of Disney princess quality to her... too safe, shoulda had more fun.

The darker chick is absolutely my favorite face sketch I've done to date. The hair rocks, I was able to blend all 15 colors in her eyes, and I got the neck to complement the sketch instead of just being a stick for the head. Too bad the lighter chick didn't come out nearly as awesome. Eh, she loved it anyway... probably because I really nailed her necklace.

My second of 4 straight days at caricatures. Today I really started to loosen up, especially on my demos.

This chick couldn't stop laughing at this demo I did of her. She ALMOST bought it, but didn't. Then, while I was on break, she came back and bought it. THEN, she came back again and asked Ivy to redo it. Ivy told her to come find me after my break...

...and SHE DID!! Much better this time! Now she's actually an Asian! (Thanks, Ivy!)

These little British kids were adorable. I always tell kids to watch the reflection in my sunglasses while I draw. It's a great way to keep them looking at you while you sketch. The girl who got the fairy body told her mom that my glasses gave me special drawing powers.

It's hard to see, but I love the way I drew her mouth, which had almost no teeth. The body came out pretty cool too, but the hair looks bad. Shoulda been all bangs. A slightly busier background wouldn't have hurt either.

This little blokette asked to be a yellow princess. She also wanted pink and purple flowers. I don't think she wanted such an ugly castle though.

Ahh, the number- one white chick name. The "S" is really dying for some red in it, but otherwise I really like this one, mostly because I broke my own mold a little in order to make the name as a whole look better, like flowers instead of a second bamboo tree, and flipping the second "A" to better balance out the turquoise. I also like the color continuity given by the butterfly, but I'll have to end this blog by bitching that the sunset is crooked and the panda is too tall.

Not bad. Judy (Carla) came out a little rough, but Zach and Sarah seem to have me drawing in the same style, and it's a style that I don't hate, which is good. Judy's jaw and cheekbones need to be more square, and her overall line quality needs to be softer. I'll have to redraw her and then try the rest of the gang.

Jungle name

This lady wanted a jungle theme and it HAD to have a giraffe and a monkey. I'd seen giraffes done in Santa Monica before, so I was able to pull one of those out of my bum.

It's painting monkeys into letters that I still don't like. Someday I'll find an effective way to keep all four limbs plus a tail contained in a letter shape without sacrificing a monkey's personality. Until then, painting one for a guest is nothing more than selling out.

About a month ago I was flown to San Antonio to teach Brush Art at Sea World. I missed my return flight, and so I spent the rest of my day drawing caricatures for Bugs Bunny.

This kid wanted to be riding a skateboard, but his mom said just the color face. Then when they came to pick up, she asked me why he wasn't riding a skateboard. Since I couldn't turn his torso into a kid on a board, I redrew it for them. See how nice I am?

I don't know WHAT is going on here. First of all, his name's not really Anthony. Second, the face sucks. Third, I started drawing a Taz body, but then accidentally gave him a Road Runner background, so I added Wile E. Coyote trying to trap him with Nerd Seed. THEN, I decided since he wasn't Taz anymore, that I'd just color him with flesh tone, and there you have it: a jacked-up, poorly-drawn caricature of an unidentified man running naked through Arizona.

So I'm at Downtown Disney last week, and this chick wants her entire name painted out of villans. I tell her I can do a single letter name, but not the whole thing. This chick is being hardcore, and insists that I can, even though I explain time after time how unique the artform is, making it tough to pull new characters out of thin air without practice, plus I don't have the photo reference to remember what they all look like... sooooo.... "Which villain would you like for your single letter illumination?" She still wants the whole thing... with as many villains as I can. Okay, that's a little more fair. Then she starts telling me which ones HAVE to be in there. I remind her, I'll do my best, but I am making NO guarantees. So they pay, and she sits nearby to wait. (Oh yeah, they're also on a time crunch.) As I dig under the booth for a fresh piece of paper, I see a book: "The Complete Guide to the Disney Villains".
No. Freakin. Way.
And voila!

Her boyfriend watched me paint the whole thing while she sat nearby to wait. (She wanted it this bad, and yet was too lazy to watch?) So we pulled this old classic:

"Oh no! I can't believe I did that! What was I thinking?"
"Is there any way you can turn that 'B' into an 'H'?"
"I wish there was.... can you guys give me like 30 more minutes?"
"I... I guess we're gonna have to, huh?"

Yeah, she totally fell for it. But she loved the art and was really cool after that. And of course, it got matted and framed.

PS: Can you spot the Disney nerd insert?

Crappy crappy class today. All I did were portraits with a marker... except for this one. It's not super-exaggerated, but at least it passes as a caricature.

Day #3 of Caricature classes at Great America. Most of you know the drill- the first one is a lame, boring likeness. The second one starts to stretch a little, and on the third one you jack them up. If you do it right, the 3rd one will look the most like them.

(On Fabian- the top one- there are 3 moles on his face. On the 3rd sketch, one is a smiley face, one is a frowney face, and one is an 8ball. I'm such a nerd.)

It's okay, but there was no thought process. Adding color was a last minute decision, which explains the hatch on the green parts, and the highlights that have nothing to do with the light source. I also need to learn how to draw hands.

I drew this in December for our booth binder cover. I was pretty proud of how quick it took, and a little saddened by the fact that it was entirely from memory. The lady asking for directions looks like a derranged freak, but she's supposed to be an O.C. broad, so I'd say it's accurate. (My favorite part is the couple.)
